London Delis

ImageFresh pasta made daily from Lina Stores

I’ve been waiting for a while to write about some of my favourite London delis and gourmet food shops. I wrote a feature for Style Pärla magazine a few days ago and it’s now live, so feel free to check it out here. They’re all really good for different reasons and reasonably priced!

Since Style Pärla magazine is undergoing some changes at the moment, I thought I’d upload the article on to this post. This is the full feature, images are courtesy of the respective establishments except for the Taj Stores’s one, which I took myself.

In a city like London, it’s hard to make a short list of anything -there are simply too many options! After a big search, we’ve compiled four of our favourite delis and specialty food shops in London, from London institutions and neighbourhood favourites to international destinations; they’re all in the business of finger-licking delicious food!

Lina Stores

Lina Gianni, pasta chef

On the corner of Brewer Street and Greet Court, in the heart of Soho, lies the oldest Italian deli in London. Its lovely green-striped awnings and the prosciuttos hanging by the window beckon you into this renowned establishment. The layout of the shop looks great, without excessive frills and as you browse through their dry goods, cured meats and fresh pasta, there’s no doubt this is authentic Italian fare –imported to Lina for almost 70 years and cooked fresh every day on premises. It’s all good, but be sure to try their fresh pasta –it’ll change your life!

Brindisa Shop 1

One of the first retailers in Borough Market, this shop has been growing strong since the 90’s, evolving from a warehouse into a permanent cage at the heart of London’s flagship food market. Open from Tuesday to Saturday every week, pop by for a spot of hand-carved jamón ibérico, first-rate olive oil, an excellent selection of cheese and helpful staff who will offer to help with your shopping as well your Spanish cooking skills. On top of their gourmet selection, be sure to try a freshly grilled chorizo sandwich during market days, you’ll be back!

Whatever your catering needs, you can be sure to find it at Taj Stores. This pan-Asian shop stocks products from all sorts of eastern and middle-eastern countries such as India, China, Thailand, Lebanon and many more. An original east-London establishment, this shop has been in business since 1936 and is one of the oldest international grocers in the UK, providing locals with the best seasonal produce flown daily from Bangladesh and hundreds of spices and dry goods. They also boast some of the best prices in London so whether you’re an east-Londoner or not, be sure to visit when you’re in need of Asian ingredients.

This grandiose-looking café may not look much like a deli from the outside but if you step inside, you’ll be surprised with all it has to offer. The entrance to this multiple-roomed restaurant is divided into four main sections: takeaway food, cake counter, florist and, past all this, not immediately visible, is a careful selection of unique products. The takeout and salads are fresh from their kitchen and made to order; the cakes are beautifully displayed on a round marble bar. Yet what make this neighbourhood favourite unique are the one-of-a-kind gourmet products, from olive oil cakes to exclusive chocolates, whatever your purchase, it’ll be extra special.
