More (Food) Photography and Exhibitions this September

A few days ago, a friend sent me a link to an article about photographer Emily Blincoe‘s Sweet Photo Series -who by the way has a beautiful instagram account, if you’d like to follow her.

Besides finding them aesthetically pleasing, I liked the idea because it reminded me of the curious tumblr that showcases neatly displayed objects (often deconstructed dishes) submitted by contributors from all over the world.

I can’t quite explain why, but I think my inner neat-freak rejoices when looking at these images, and judging by how often similar images pop up all over the internet, I’m not the only one.

A couple of days ago, another set of images reminded me of this kind of photography: this time a witty campaign to promote the Sydney International Food Festival. David Lebovitz, one of my favourite food writers and bloggers of all time, shared a link to their clever campaign showcased on visualnews.com. The idea was to promote a national cuisine by making the country’s flag with food its traditionally associated with. My favourite one is Japan’s, minimal and brilliant, like most Japanese things.

So on the topic of photography, here’s a list of TimeOut’s top 10 exhibitions to see this month in London. Many of them are free and I can personally recommend the Miles Aldridge exhibit at Somerset House. It’s only £6.50 for adults and £3 on Mondays (excluding bank holidays).

Food Photography: BBC Radio 4 Food Podcasts

Delicious Louisiana Hamburger at Honest Burger in Soho

I’ve recently gotten into podcasts/radio programmes (a bit late, I know). But I like listening to them while I’m tidying up/cooking/packing or just going through my feedly, never time JUST to listen!

I especially like the BBC’s food podcasts (predictably), this one is a bit old (June, 2010), but I think it tackles a fascinating topic and personal obsession of mine: food photography. I’m definitely a… victim? of this trend and I often wonder why and when we all decided to document our food in an almost ritualistic way.

National Art Pass

Image

Just received my ArtPass in the mail, SUPER excited. I thought I’d share how this fantastic charity works in case anyone didn’t know about it or wants to become a member.

The concept is simple. You pay a (very) small fee per year and by showing this card in most museums and galleries around the UK you’ll get a discount or concession price.

On top of paying less to see exhibitions, of every pound you pay for your ticket, 25p will be given to the Art Fund -the charity behind this pass- and the money they collect goes to buying artwork for UK national collections.
